If you're in the market for a new comforter, you know how big of a decision it can be. You want something durable that's going to keep you comfortable during the cold of winter or that you can use year-round. But with so many factors to consider, like fill power and weight, it can be difficult to find a comforter you're confident you'll love. To make the decision easier, we're highlighting some of the best comforters on the market—plus, a few things to keep in mind as you shop.

Tom Ryan, director of product testing at Sleep Foundation

What to Look for When You Shop

Before purchasing a comforter, there are some factors to consider that will help you find one suited to your needs.

  • Fill power: Fill power refers to the quality and loftiness of down and, thus, how much down is needed in a product—the higher the number, the higher the quality and fluffiness. "Since down feathers are light and insulating, a comforter with higher fill power will be warmer and lighter," says Tom Ryan, director of product testing at Sleep Foundation. "In other words, a comforter with a 700 fill power will be warmer and lighter than one with 400 fill power."
  • Weight: Look for a comforter weight that suits your sleeping needs. "When you’re shopping for a comforter, you’ll often see them listed by weight—lightweight, mid-weight, heavyweight," says Ryan. "Lightweight comforters are usually great options for warmer climates or summer months, while heavyweight comforters are great for cold winters." Mid-weight comforters are a great all-season option.
  • Material: Choose a comforter material that's ideal for you. "If you’re a hot sleeper, we highly recommend looking for a shell made from 100 percent cotton," says Ryan, adding that the material is breathable. Other breathable materials include linen and bamboo, while cold sleepers may prefer flannel or nylon.
  • Certifications: Ensure the comforter was ethically made by looking for specific certifications. "OEKO-Tex is a third-party organization that certifies if a material has been made responsibly and free from harmful chemicals," says Ryan. "This is usually a helpful label to look for when evaluating the cotton shell of a comforter." For down comforters, look for a certification from the International Down Standard, which ensures down and feathers are ethically sourced, he adds.

To help you find the right option for you, we rounded up some of the best comforters on the market.
