This biryani spice blend is made with a mix of eight spices for a fragrant and complex finished dish. Use it to make beef biryani or add a few pinches to roasted vegetables or marinades for an instant flavor boost. Making this blend is incredibly easy: You’ll simply combine ground spices including cumin, coriander, ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon. For best results, we recommend buying your spices whole and grinding them at home, as pre-ground spices can lose their flavor more quickly.

What is Biryani?

Biryani is a fragrant dish made with rice, meat, vegetables, and spices. It is considered Persian in origin—the word biryani comes from the Farsi phrase birinj biriyan which means fried rice—but the dish eventually made its way farther east, where it became a staple in South Asian cooking. It's very popular throughout India and Pakistan as well as in Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and Myanmar. Many different versions and cooking styles of biryani exist, depending largely on where it is made.

To keep your spices as fresh tasting as possible, avoid storing them above or next to the stove as heat and moisture can more quickly degrade their flavor over time.
