Credit for pairing doughnuts with coffee might go to the Pennsylvania Dutch, who first made doughnuts with holes, a great shape for dunking.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup hot water

  • 2 tablespoons coarse-ground coffee (for a stronger cup, add up to 2 tablespoons more)

Directions

  1. Bring water to a boil; let stand 2 minutes (water should be just below boiling point).

  2. Pour a small amount into a French press. Swirl once to warm carafe; discard.

  3. Put ground coffee in carafe. Pour in hot water. Stir once with a wooden spoon. Position plunger at top of carafe; let stand 4 minutes. Slowly push plunger down. Serve.
