Before making your lunchtime salad, you may want to double check your greens. Several spinach and salad kits have been recalled due to potential listeria contamination, according to a new announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The subject of the recall is BrightFarms, which has issued a voluntary recall of spinach grown by its supplier Element Farms. Due to potential cross-contamination, the brand is also issuing a voluntary recall of a limited quantity of four salad kit products: BrightFarms Mediterranean Crunch Kit, BrightFarms Chickpea Caesar Crunch Kit, BrightFarms Bacon Ranch Crunch Kit, BrightFarms Southwest Chipotle.

The recalled products were distributed to retailers across seven states including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Each kit comes in 4-ounce clear, plastic containers. The "best by" date, UPC, and facility code can be found at the bottom of the package.

The issue was identified after routine sampling conducted by Element Farms yielded a positive result for listeria. Subsequently, the spinach and salad kits were recalled and distribution of Element Farms grown spinach has been temporarily suspended. To date, no positive test results or reported illness have been received on the recalled products, the FDA states.

Retailers have been instructed to remove all recalled products from store shelves and consumers are being urged to discard the kits or return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions are encouraged to call 1-866-857-8745 between 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EDT or email info@brightfarms.com with the subject line: Recall.
