How to Make a Dandelion Costume

Dozens of frayed plant-based drinking straws give this kids' costume a touch of realism.

Turn plant-based drinking straws into a fluffy flower by snipping and fraying the ends and hot-gluing them to a swim cap. Add felt leaves and a green skirt to a green leotard and tights, and invite admirers to make a wish. This no-sew getup comes together with the help of our template and works well if you are in need of a last-minute costume idea. What You'll Need

Materials

  • About 100 white plant-based drinking straws (Beryland Compostable Plant-Based Drinking Straws)
  • Hot glue gun
  • White swim cap (Sporti Bubble Swim Cap with Chin Strap in Ivory)
  • Foam wig head (optional)
  • Costume Template
  • Green felt
  • Fabric marker and scissors
  • Green leotard (Leotard Boutique Long-Sleeve Leotard in Green)
  • Green skirt
  • Green tights (Leotard Boutique Microfiber Tights in Green)

Instructions

  1. Make hat: Cut the end of a straw in half lengthwise, about 3 inches down. Cut that section in half again, then again, so you have six to eight little pieces at end of straw. Cut a big batch of straws this way, then begin hot-gluing each one to swim cap, in lines about one inch apart, starting along front edge. (If you have a foam wig head, use it to give the cap structure while you glue.) Hold each straw until glue dries, about 30 seconds.

  2. Following template, draw two leaves at about arm's length on green felt. Cut out and hot-glue to shoulder and upper sleeve of leotard, tucking ends around neckline and under armpit. Pair leotard and cap with skirt and tights.
