As one of the most commonly used rooms in your home, your bedroom should feel like a calming haven. But if yours has clothes strewn about the floor and miscellaneous items building up on your bedside tables, this space may feel stressful rather than relaxing. Beyond aesthetic reasons, keeping your room clean is important in order to prevent this space from collecting dust, dirt, and other grime. To make this process easier for you, we're walking you through how to clean your room, which you can do in a few easy steps.

How Often to Clean

Your bedroom should be cleaned once a week, as it’s the room where you typically spend most of your time. In between weekly cleanings, make sure you're picking dirty clothes up off the ground, wiping down your bedside tables, and making your bed daily. Some tasks, like cleaning your ceiling fan and window treatments, can be done quarterly.

The Importance of Cleaning Your Bedroom

Since a lot of spare time is spent in the bedroom, it's important to prevent this space from building up with dust, dirt, and other dander. Breathing in these particles can be hazardous to your respiratory health, especially if you have any allergies, says Sabrina Fierman, owner of the high-end cleaning service New York’s Little Elves. What's more, your bedroom should feel serene, and keeping it clean can help make it feel more enjoyable.

How to Clean Your Room

Follow these steps to give your bedroom a thorough deep clean.

1. Put Away Miscellaneous Items

Start by putting away any items that don't belong in your bedroom, such as beauty products you keep in the bathroom or empty water cups that belong in the kitchen.

2. Take out the trash

Throw away any trash that has accumulated in your bedroom, like old receipts and tissue paper. Empty the trash can, then give it a thorough wipe down and replace the liner (if you use one).

3. Pick up Dirty Clothes

Picking up dirty clothes should be a daily chore, but if it’s not, now is the time to put these items into your hamper and start a load of wash.

4. Put Away Clean Clothes

If you tend to throw sweaters, shirts, and other clothes around your room after trying them on, pick everything up and put it away in your closet or dresser.

5. Dust the Ceiling Fan

Now that everything in your room has a home, you can begin wiping down surfaces. Start by cleaning your ceiling fan with warm, soapy water. This task can be done quarterly or as needed, says Fierman.

6. Dust Window Treatments

Dust your window treatments by going over them with a vacuum with the brush attachment. If you don't have this tool on hand, you can tumble dry your window treatments with a damp cloth to get the dust off of them. Just make sure you check the care tag before using the dryer method.

7. Clean Windows and Mirrors

Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean any mirrors in your bedroom and wipe fingerprints and obvious grime from windows.

8. Dust and Wipe Down Surfaces

Use a damp cloth or dust rag to wipe down bedside tables, dressers, bookshelves, windowsills, and any other surfaces in your bedroom.

9. Strip Your Bed and Wash Sheets

Once your room has been dusted and cleaned, strip the bed and wash your sheets, pillowcases, and bed skirt (if you have one). Shake out blankets and quilts you don’t wash weekly. If you want to freshen up a duvet or quilt, running them through the dryer with a damp cloth will remove a lot of dust, says Becky Rapinchuk of Clean Mama.

10. Vacuum or Mop

Vacuum your bedroom floors, then mop them if you have hardwood. Don’t forget about under the bed and dressers, as well as your closet floors, as these areas are especially prone to dust buildup.

11. Make the Bed

Your final step is to place your freshly washed sheets and pillowcases back on your bed and revel in the sense of a job well done.

How to Keep Your Room Clean

One way to ensure you are keeping your bedroom clean is by making a schedule. This will help you stay on top of bigger tasks, like mopping your floors and wiping down mirrors. Additionally, try cleaning your room as you notice mess accumulating. For example, rather than letting clothes build up on the floor, pick them up and put them in their designated areas before going to bed.
