Melissa Breyer is a writer and editor who has worked in digital lifestyle media since 2007. Prior to that, she worked in print, writing for magazines and editing books. She joined Team Martha in 2023 after nearly a decade at the award-winning green living site Treehugger.

Her work has been featured in local and international publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, National Geographic, Audubon Magazine, and more. She is the co-author of the best-selling Build Your Running Body (The Experiment) and the award-winning True Food: Eight Simple Steps to a Healthier You (National Geographic)—for both titles, she developed recipes and penned the chapters on planet-friendly nutrition.

Experience

Melissa started her publishing career as a design writer in 2001 and has since developed expertise across the lifestyle and green living spaces. She has written books on running, healthy eating, and weather—and hundreds of articles on everything from antique furniture and quirky architecture to edible flowers and garden creatures. Her work has been featured in local and international publications, including The New York Times, National Geographic, and Audubon magazine.

She joined the Treehugger and Mother Nature Network family in 2014 and served as Treehugger's editorial director until 2023, when she moved to Martha Stewart.

Additionally, Melissa is an award-winning photographer and photography writer, has run 10 marathons, and moonlights as a pastry chef. She is also an active advocate for migratory birds and sits on the communications board committee for New York City Audubon.

Education

Melissa has a Bachelor of Arts in studio art from Hunter College. She also has a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from F.I.T., State University of New York. For her graduate work, she specialized in the history of decorative arts with a focus on connoisseurship and conservation. She was the winner of the National Education Foundation Award for Distinguished Scholar and the Dean’s Recognition Award, and was the program valedictorian. More recently, she earned a certificate in plant-based nutrition from Cornell University.
