What Is the Unexpected Red Theory?

Unexpected red theory is a term recently coined by Brooklyn-based designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon on TikTok. It describes the interior design phenomenon by which adding a pop of red instantly improves the look of any space, especially in places where it shouldn’t necessarily make sense.

"From Taylor Swift’s signature red lipstick to this home interior trend, red has always been a color that makes a statement," says Carolyn Ames Noble, former American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) board chair. While adding a touch of red to your space is not a new concept, the trend has amassed countless likes, views, and comments on social media, captivating interior design and home décor enthusiasts.

Why Does it Work?

For many, though, one question remains: Why does it work? "Red is a primary color that undulates throughout every other color," explains Ames. "So, you will either find red or the complement of red in some form in all colors."

Red is one of the most visible colors in the color spectrum. "It can instantly grab your attention and imbue energy into a space," says interior designer Debbie Mathews. "Adding a bit of the ‘unexpected’ can make a space feel imperfect and interesting and therefore less contrived and serious."

While plenty of other home décor trends involve major renovations or expensive home improvements, adding an unexpected pop of red to your space can be affordable, not to mention easy. Anyone on nearly any budget can play with red—all it takes is a little bit of imagination

Add an Unexpected Pop of Red Into Your Home Décor

Ready to experiment with a splash of red where you least expect it? We asked interior designers to share their top tips for how to incorporate the color red into your space in ways both big and small.

Opt for Kitchen Accents

The kitchen is a great place to play with red, especially if you’re in the market for small kitchen appliances and the like. "Bring the unexpected red theory into the kitchen by incorporating red appliances, cookware, or even a bold red backsplash,” suggests former ASID National Board Chair Kerrie Kelly. “It adds a playful and inviting element to the heart of the home.” Cookware, bakeware, and other kitchen essentials are available in shades of red at all different price points, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to play with color.

Play With Drapery

Window treatments and drapes make a tremendous impact on a space, making it feel cozy and complete, and adding a pop of red can have an even greater impact. “Red has long been touted as a historical color that is timeless, so adding a red drapery trim or a patterned fabric with this vibrant hue can be invigorating but also withstand the test of time,” says Mathews. “With so many fabrics and trims to choose from, adding a bit of red in this way is easy.” Drapes are also easy to swap out with zero fuss if you change your mind or your mood later on.

Create an Accent Wall

Accent walls will never go out of style, and neither will the color red. Choose the right room in your house, and then find your ideal shade. “Paint one wall in a bold red hue to create a focal point in the room,” recommends Kelly. “Pair it with neutral furnishings to balance the vibrancy and create a striking contrast.” While painting an entire room can be costly, painting one wall is a lot more affordable.

Incorporate Vintage or Antique Light Fixtures

Just because unexpected red theory is a new term doesn’t mean you can’t embrace it by choosing antique pieces. Red is timeless, so you’re likely to find gorgeous light fixtures in a variety of hues. “I love how these storied objects can add a sense of history and depth to a space,” Mathews says. “Over the years I have come across a number of unique red tole or iron chandeliers and sconces that have truly transformed the rooms that they were used in. Simply adding a touch of red in this way can be interesting and unexpected.”

Try Red In Your Furniture

Adding red furniture is exactly the kind of bold choice that pays off if you’re trying to liven up a room. “Incorporate a piece of red furniture, such as a sofa or armchair, to add an accent of color and personality to your living space,” says Kelly. “Opt for classic silhouettes in luxurious fabrics for a timeless look.” Remember, you don’t necessarily have to bring home the largest piece of furniture to make the biggest impact. And if you’re not ready to commit to a vibrant red couch, opt for one with a red print or red pillows and throws.

Refresh a Child’s Bedroom

Primary colors are evocative of childhood, so adding a bright red dresser or wardrobe to a child’s bedroom can add a layer of fun to the space. “By mixing it with other primary colors, it can evoke a sense of playfulness and joy,” says Mathews. “Just by painting a chest of drawers or adding whimsical artwork with this bold color can transform the room.”
