Tahini is a versatile, delicious sauce that can be used to jazz up a salad or served alongside crudité for dipping. But before you reach for a jar of it, check the packaging: AB World Foods US, Inc. of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, is issuing a voluntary recall of Al’Fez Natural Tahini due to potential contamination with salmonella, per the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The recalled tahini was sold nationwide in retail stores starting May 26, 2023. The product was sold in 5.06-ounce glass jars with the UPC 711464506778 and a "best before" date of "2024 JL 11" or later.

The products being recalled have the following lot numbers: "3031", "3080”, "3270", "3297" and corresponding best-before dates of "2024 JL 31", "2024 SE 09", "2025 MR 27", "2025 AL 04." Images of the affected product can be found on the FDA's website.

Symptoms of salmonella infection typically start between 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated food and may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. The illness usually last four to seven days and most individuals typically recover without treatment.

Customers who have purchased the product are advised to dispose of or return the product to the place of purchase immediately. Those who have questions may contact Adifi Burman via email at info@alfez.us or by phone at 647-218-0081 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
